HALF GIRLFRIEND – Movie Review (3/5 stars)

The film Half Girlfriend has hit the theaters last Friday and garnering mix reviews. Here goes my one. The film stars Shraddha Kapoor as Riya Somani and Arjun Kapoor as Madhav Jha in the lead roles. The cast also includes Vikrant Massey, Rhea Chakraborty and Seema Biswas. The romantic drama has been visualized by Chetan Bhagat’s novel “Half Girlfriend” and has been directed by Mohit Suri. The film is also produced by Mohit Suri along with Ekta Kapoor, Shoba Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat.

Now is the time to talk about the plot.

Surely the film revolves around a boy and a girl and the emerging love between them. Madhav played by Arjun HALF GIRLFRIEND - Movie ReviewKapoor is a Bihari boy who hardly speaks English. On the other hand Shraddha Kapoor plays Riya who is a rich girl. Arjun Kapoor gets an admission in sports quota in the college. There is a love at first sight moment for Madhav when he first sees Riya playing basketball. Then they turn into buddies after playing couple of matches with each other. She also starts falling in love with him but after things get a bit messed up between them the story takes a turn. Riya’s marriage is fixed with her family friend Rohan. They get separated.

While Madhav is busy in his social work for his village he meets Riya again. She has got a divorce by then. They again hook up quite often but this time Madhav’s mom asks Riya to leave as she didn’t want her child to marry a divorcee. Riya leaves a message stating that she has been diagnosed with cancer. But the story continues Madhav searching for everywhere possible in America as she had a wish to sing in a bar in front of a live audience. The film finally concludes with both of them together and running a school in Bihar.

HALF GIRLFRIEND - Movie ReviewHalf Girlfriend Movie Review –

Well, if you have already read the novel then the story would be quite predictable for you. Still with a good direction it is successful to keep you engaging throughout the story. Arjun has done a good job as a Bihari boy. On the other hand Shraddha has performed effortlessly as she fits in the character. In the first half the film has some comedic sequences which won’t let you feel bored. After they get separated then there is a flow of emotional scenes from everywhere. To talk about the direction Mohit Suri is best in the job for love stories these days. The best part of the movie is undoubtedly the music. The songs fit and perfectly match the situations they are placed on.

Bottom line..

If you are a fan of romantic and emotional movies then this will be a treat for you. If you are a person in a relationship then take your partners and go for this movie. Despite the movie keeps you engaging, it has similar story that we have seen and heard before. It definitely has the downside for the people who have already read the novel. Still then this type of story is really familiar in Bollywood. So Half Girlfriend scores 3 out of 5 ratings from my side.
